Five Helpful Tips to Know on a Video Shoot

Boston video production servicesTop 5 Tips for Video Shoots

When working on a video shoot, it is important to know ahead of time everything you can do to be as helpful and productive as possible to make sure the shoot goes by seamlessly for everyone.

Come Prepared to Set

Don’t be that person who doesn’t have everything they need. All you will be doing is making everyone else unhappy, and who wants to work on a video set where everyone is stressed and anxious? Bring water, SD cards, gaffers tape; bring whatever you need and make sure you don’t forget it.

Have a Positive Attitude On Set

Nobody wants to be working with someone who has a sour attitude all day. It lowers the energy on set, and all in all makes it unpleasant to work with you. Plus, you may not get hired again if nobody wants to be around you the one day you did get to work. Not to mention, if some things aren’t going as planned, you will stress the client out if your attitude is anything less than positive.

Bring Water and Snacks

Working all day can be tiring, especially if you’re stuck inside shooting with no opportunities to relax. This is why it is important to bring food and water with you. Bring healthy snacks to keep up your energy levels; aka a banana or some mixed nuts. Avoid foods like candy or chips, because they will give you a quick rush of energy and then you will go back to being exhausted.

Video production servicesKeep Your Cell Phone on Silent

Don’t let that call from your grandma disrupt the entire video production shoot. By keeping your phone on silent, you are making sure that nothing happens to interrupt the shoot, which is only a good thing. Also, having your phone start ringing makes you look unprofessional, and nobody wants that.

Have Fun and Pay Attention

Try to have fun! Enjoying working on set might be a bit tough considering you could be working a ten hour shift, but having a positive attitude can rub off on the people around you. If everyone is in a good mood, having fun on set and enjoying your job will be easy. Working on set can be stressful, but it can also be really fun. Don’t forget that!

What to Bring with you on a Video Shoot

New England video productionTop Tips for a Video Shoot

Working on a film set can be exciting, exhausting, and hectic all at the same time. There are so many things to set up, to fix. So many people you need to ask about what goes where and who needs to be here or there. However, having what you need to make the video production shoot go by as smoothly as possible is a huge bonus.

What Should I Being to a Video Shoot?

1.First rule: bring lots of water. It is easy to get dehydrated by standing around all day handling the hot lights and the heavy equipment. Bring a refillable water bottle so you can keep the environment safe and stay as hydrated as possible throughout your long day of shooting.

2. Make sure you have a phone charger. It is likely you will barely be using your phone at all, but just in case you forgot to charge it the night before and need it for directions on your way home, it is always better to be safe than sorry. However, don’t forget to turn your ringer off. Don’t be that person on set who’s phone goes off in the middle of a take.

3. Bring extras. Of everything. Whether it be SD cards, gaffers tape, or lens caps, bring more than one. Sometimes things get lost, and it may not even be your fault. So don’t forget to bring more than one of everything, just in case. It can only help, and odds are you won’t even need them.

4. Take a backpack with you. Backpacks can be extremely helpful during a shoot, and not just because that’s where you can store all of your belongings. You might need to transport the equipment to another area, and having a backpack with you could be a huge benefit to the crew.

Packing for Success: Video Production Shoot

Video Production Services in New England

When it comes to video production services, nothing demonstrates professionalism and trustworthiness quite like a prepared team. It may seem like old news but no one can overestimate the importance of saving multiple copies, bringing spare batteries, emptying memory cards, and of course, the old faithful gaffers tape to keep those bulky and uninhibited cords out of sight. Throughout the years of providing video production services in the Boston area, these are a few of the essential items and habits SVG has found to be both necessary and heroic to accomplish our corporate video ideas. Skillman Video Group considers these few and often overlooked items to be present at all of our Boston video production shoots:

The biggies: Yes, we mean bring the camera, tripod, lights, and audio equipment. Do a quick checklist before leaving for the shoot to ensure all of the necessary pieces are there to make your corporate video ideas come to life.

Bring spares of everything (Memory cards, light bulbs, batteries, mics, etc.): Running out of space on a memory card can delay a team heavily or disallow a project to meet its full potential. Bring spare memory cards with ample amounts of storage. Bring extra light bulbs and batteries to spare everyone the embarrassment and frustration of powerless equipment. A video that is well lit for a minute, while the other 20 seconds are not, will distract the audience and can delay the editing process. Bring spares of spares. And while you’re at it, make sure the vehicle has its spare tire.

  • Chargers: This one is fairly self-explanatory. If it doesn’t require batteries, make sure it can be charged before the equipment, laptop, phone, etc. veers to 0% and is rendered useless.
  • A hard drive/laptop to save work to immediately: Nothing is quite as defeating as hearing the words, “It’s gone” in the Boston video production scene. One can never save their work too many times or on too many hard drives. Bring a hard drive to save work onto immediately. The team is taking a ten minute break? Save. Lunch time? Save. About to leave for the day? SAVE! We recommend the Seagate hard drives for external memory.
  • Gaffers tape: It truly is a hero. Cords are hazardous with so many moving feet, a trip or a fall can be dangerous. On top of this, tape tells actors and interviewees where to stand or walk to, making any bit of sequence much easier to map out.
  • Cables: Extension cords, HDMI, etc.

Video Production Packing List

Boston video production services require many moving pieces. And so, even though a team may think to bring the bigger items (camera, sound recorder, tripod, lights, etc.), it can be easy to overlook the little pieces that allow the larger equipment to actually turn on. A video production team may have the expensive equipment, but bringing the extras, spares, and being tedious with precious content and footage, is a characteristic of the production team. At SVG, we understand the importance of this and is another reason that sets us apart from the rest. When it comes to catering to peoples already tight schedules, missing a shot, a line, misplacing memory, or dealing with faulty equipment due to unpreparedness is unaffordable. When in the business of providing video production services, one needs to be prepared for everything. And so, to accomplish those corporate video ideas and anything in between, SVG makes sure to check, save, and always bring a spare.
